Omnia App Store Action

Samsung plans to roll-out an app store for its Omnia smartphones, and has signed on the likes of Electronic Arts, Gameloft, Capcom, and TAITO to help it expand the 300 launch applications to 2000 by the end of the year.

The store will initially arrive in the U.K., France, and Italy on September 14. A further 30 European countries will follow, and though Samsung confirmed plans for the Americas and Asia, it hasn’t mentioned any dates.

You’ll also need to have an Omnia or I8910 phone, but support is expected to soon also include handsets like the Omnia 2 and OmniaLITE.

Umm, Samsung? What’s with the silhouette? Pictures of the Omnia 2 are everywhere. Hell, the device itself is available in some parts of the world. Oh well. While the previously rumored launch date of August 23rd has come and gone, the Verizon Omnia 2 shouldn’t be too further off – at least, so says Samsung Mobile USA.BGR reader Pandabarr spotted this new “Coming Soon” page within Samsung’s walls; while there’s no new information tucked within, they do offer you the opportunity to “Be the First to Know” the new details by signing up for their mailing list. Given Samsung’s track record, “First to Know” here probably means “First to know, after blog readers”.

Omnia 2 Set Free August 23rd

The Omnia 2 is rumored to be released on August 23rd. Boy Genius reports, “Well what have we here? Our ninjas know better than to think they can take weekends off and one of our more diligent and trusted Best Best Mobile moles just hit us with a very interesting screen cap.”

Sunday, August 23rd is shaping up to be a hell of a day for the mobile mega-retailer and in turn, it’s going to be a hell of a day for phone fans in general. Let’s have a look at what’s in store:

All we know for the time being is that it’s a Samsung handset headed for Sprint, along with the Samsung Reclaim can be seen just off screen at the very top. We can’t make the date out but we know it’ll be sometime in August. Whatever… We’re to busy thinking about the possible BL40-like Chocolate Touch and Sammy’s Omnia sequel to worry about the Reclaim.

Omnia HD User Review

PH from My-Symbian gives his first impressions of the Samsung Omnia HD. Mobile phones need more genuine write up like this. PH reports, “Ok, so I spent some time with the phone already, one weekend. What can I say? Maybe I will start from what I dislike about the phone:

1. The shape and ways of the UI is sometimes too complex indeed. Double tapping is ok, but the way the UI rotates to horizontal when you want to type something is sometimes irritating and bizarre. Definitely what we need here is a good qwerty keyboard for vertical operations.

2. The way the phone charges is insane – no way for cradling the phone. We have to open a cover and insert a pretty sophisticated plug in order to power up the battery. Very bizzare!

3. When using Opera Mini, it is sometimes very hard to press something or make a tick. For instance when you login to a site and you have an option of “Remember Me at next Login”, the box is very small and it is VERY difficult to make a tick (sometimes I was even failing).

4. The widgets of the Omnia are too big and thus too clattered for me. The whole system of the 3 pages for widgets plus the side bar with them is a little over the top for me. I chose the simple view.

5. I had a situation, when the pics in the album where showing pretty slowly one by one, I dunno what might be the reason. (PS. I installed pretty many apps already, some working in the background like Handy Shell).

The good things:

6. The screen is outstanding. If someone needs big and top quality screen, I have never seen something like this!!

7. The build quality is very good. It is maybe too easy to slip away from the hand, but it is classy for sure!

8. The speed and solidity of the OS is really of top quality. I have never seen and used something like this.

9. Pictures quality is outstanding, no doubt! It is worth to have a little bit bulkier phone for pics like this.

10. Onscreen keyboard in full qwerty mode in horizontal mode is working without problems. I am not doing any mistakes. You only need to be careful not to drop it in this position, as it is slightly slippery.

11. I dunno if it is preliminary, but the GSM reception seems to be very good. I was using the phone in bad reception areas and the sound was without problems. The only unit that was like this was my P1i. Plus the GPS is locking very fast!

Phone Arena Gets An Omnia 2

Phone Arena has finally gotten their hands on an Omnia 2. While the full review is pending they have posted some pictures and initial impressions.They report, “Samsung took on the WinMo skinning game with the Omnia, and by all accounts it was relatively successful…

Their TouchWiz is arguably the best overlay this side of TouchFLO, and with customizable widgets it offers the user more control. TouchWiz 2.0 is now here; we first saw it on the OmniaPRO and it also powers the Omnia II. Its a fine UI, and we applaud Samsung for going deeper into the OS than HTC has, but it suffers from lag. The 3.7″ 480×800 AMOLED screen is downright gorgeous, and if it had 16m colors like the Pre or iPhone it would probably be the best display we’ve ever seen. Instead we’re stuck with a paltry 65k colors. The plastic screen gives it a cheaper feel than the panel deserves. The size is still good given the massive display, and it’s thin enough to comfortably slip into your pocket. Other features are as high end as you’d expect: 7.2 HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Opera Mobile, GPS, 5 Megapixel Camera with DVD quality video recording, DivX and XviD support and 8GB of internal storage with microSDHC expansion. Overall a pretty solid package, but how will it stand up against the other super offerings of today’s market? Stay tuned for our full review soon!”

Omnia 2 Hits Singapore This Weekend

We thought the Samsung Omnia 2 was going to come in October - but Singapore is lucky enough to rock this 3g mobile phone this weekend! We want this cell phone now, damn you Singapore, damn you and your fancy phone.

The Omnia 2 is a Windows Mobile device that packs a 3.7-inch AMOLED screen with WVGA resolution, Wi-Fi, 3G, HSDPA, HSUPA and GPS, 5MP camera and advanced video and multimedia features. The recommended retail price seems to be 440 euro before all the discounts and extras so it could be quite reasonably priced for the package.

And that ain’t all… the Samsung Omnia HD will be launching on August 1st for 540 Euros, amping up all of the multimedia specs to pretty ridiculous levels. A short production run was done in May but stopped quickly to fix some minor issues… hopefully they’re all ironed out!

The only issue here in both of these cases is you have to deal with WinMo which most phone fans don’t exactly enjoy, but the Omnia series might just be good enough to roll with the punches!
